Poon Hill is one of the best places in the whole country to enjoy the sunrise over the Himalayas, turning the white snow-capped mountains golden. The Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek is a short, nine-day adventure within the Annapurna region of Nepal designed for both experienced and first-time trekkers. The journey promises you breathtaking scenery of the majestic Himalayas, diverse landscapes, and a chance to immerse yourself in the rich culture and traditions of the region. 

The trek is ranked as moderate when it comes to its difficulty, meaning it is not too difficult and can be a great choice for you even if you are a first time trekker. We will traverse through lush jungles and the charming village of Ghandruk, experience the simple and beautiful lifestyle of the locals, and immerse ourselves in the rich natural and cultural beauty of the region. We will start our journey in the vibrant capital of Nepal, Kathmandu, as we take a scenic drive to Pokhara, also called Lake City. Pokhara is one of the tourist areas of Nepal, surrounded by the majestic Annapurna range and numerous lakes. The trek itself starts in the low foothills of Birethanti, from where we gradually ascend through charming Gurung villages and lush rhododendron forests. Each day during the trek will offer you spectacular views of the Himalayas, with one of the main highlights being an unreal sunrise view over the Himalayas from Poon Hill.

Itinerary

Day 1 : Arrival in Kathmandu (1,400 m & 4,600 ft)

The Red Rose staff will greet you in traditional Nepali style as soon as you arrive at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu. They will also transfer you to your comfortable hotel in a private car, where you can rest and prepare for the trek tomorrow. In the evening, we’ll host you with a warm welcome dinner and also have a short meeting at the hotel where we will introduce you to your experienced guide, who will be your companion throughout the trek. 

 

 

Meals: Welcome Dinner.

Accommodation: A 3 Star Hotel in Kathmandu.

Day 2 : Scenic Drive to Pokhara (900m)

We will start the day early in the morning with a warm breakfast, then head to the tourist bus station. The drive to Pokhara will be full of beautiful scenery and diverse terrain as we travel along the river Marshyangdi, passing through small, pretty villages. 

Pokhara is called The Lake City as it is nestled beside the calming Phewa Lake. Due to its smaller size and lower population than Kathmandu, it is also the city with the greatest number of tourist attractions. The city itself offers breathtaking panoramic views of the Annapurna range, Machapuchare Peak, Dhaulagiri, and other giants. We will settle for the night in a comfortable hotel near Lakeside.

Accommodation: A hotel at Lakeside.

Day 3 : Pokhara to Ulleri (2020m)

After a delicious morning breakfast, we will leave Pokhara in a private vehicle for a scenic 2-4-hour drive to Birethanti. Birethanti is a charming village situated at 1039 metres above where our trek will begin. We officially begin our journey, and for today, our destination will be Ulleri. The trail to Ulleri should take 4-5 hours through Hile, a bustling village at 1495 metres.

Duration: 2-4 Hrs drive and 4-5 Hrs trek

Day 4 : Hike to Ghorepani (2,810m)

Our destination for the day will be Ghorepani, which sits at an altitude of 2810 meters. The hike to Ghorepani starts with a steep climb followed by an easier trail as we enter beautiful forests of oak and rhododendron trees. We will take short breaks, breathe the fresh mountain air, and enjoy the stunning views of the mountain range throughout the day before settling for the night in Ghorepani.

Day 5 : Sunrise at Poon Hill (3210m) and Trek to Tadapani

Today is an exciting day as we will hike to our main destination of the trek, Poon Hill. Poon Hill is a viewpoint that offers you a stunning panoramic view of the majestic Himalayas from where we witness the sunrise as the rays paint those peaks golden. After we experience the magic of sunrise, we’ll return to Ghorepani and trek ourselves to Tadapani. We will traverse through scenic ridges, charming pine and rhododendron forests, and keep ourselves engaged by nature throughout the journey. We will settle for the night in Tadapani, where we will relax, enjoy a delicious meal, and share stories and experiences of witnessing the magical sunrise.

Duration: 6-7 Hrs trek

Day 6 : Descend to Ghandruk (1,940m)

Today, our trek will take us on a scenic descent through colourful forests as we move ourselves towards the charming villages inhabited by the Gurung people. The walk should take roughly 5 hours. Ghandruk is a beautiful village well known for offering mesmerising mountain views and rich culture. You can relax, enjoy the scenery, explore the village, immerse yourself in the unique culture, and visit the Annapurna Conservation Office and museum after you reach Ghandruk.

Duration: 4-5 Hrs trek

Accommodation: Guest House

Day 7 : Trek to Syauli Bazar (1,170m) and Drive Back to Pokhara

We start our day with a warm breakfast, enjoying the beautiful sunrise over the mountains. After that, we will move towards Syauli Bazar, which should be a 4-hour trek. We mark the end of our adventure as we reach Syauli Bazar and drive back to Pokhara. We will settle ourselves in a comfortable hotel near Lakeside. You can relax, explore the lakeside, and soak in the views in the afternoon in Pokhara.

 

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Duration: 3-4 Hrs trek and 2 -4 hrs drive

Accommodation: A hotel at Lakeside.

Day 8 : Drive back to Kathmandu (1,400m)

In the morning, we will bid farewell to Pokhara and hop on a comfortable tourist bus for a scenic 8-hour drive back to Kathmandu. As we arrive in Kathmandu, the Red Rose team will host you with a special dinner on your successful trek. You can share your experience, memories, and stories with your fellow trekkers.

Duration: 7-8 Hrs drive

Accommodation: Tea house or Trekking lodge.

Day 9 : Departure

Today we mark our final day of our Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek. The Red Rose Team will ensure you are transferred to Tribhuvan International Airport for your departure flight. We hope you had an unforgettable experience in Nepal.

Essential Info

Hotel and Lodge on Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek

Redrose Travel arranges it’s best for comfortable and pleasant accommodation and also provides you nourished hygienic food.

We will be staying at the standard hotel (rating of 2 – 3 Star) in Kathmandu whereas, in the remote areas, we will be staying at a tea house or a local lodge. We can also arrange luxurious rooms from 4 – 5 Star hotels in the cities with an additional charge but the remote mountainous regions have no such facilities. Tea houses and local lodges in the remote region will have a usual bed with usual mattress and a pillow. Only a few of them have electricity but the rest rely on lanterns or candles lights.

Booking of the room is done prior to the starting of the trek. If in case we are not able to book the room in advance, we can book it upon reaching there as these areas have ample of lodges and tea houses. If for some reason, we aren’t able to book a lodge/teahouse - we can easily set a camp which will be the most adventurous part of the trek itself.

 

Food and Drinks for Ghorepani Poon Hill Trekking

Redrose Travel  focuses on client’s safety and health and gives it the foremost priority. We make sure that each and every client get the same portion of clean, hygienic and nourishing food which is a very necessary - especially while trekking.

During the trek - all the meals i.e. breakfast, lunch, and dinner are provided inclusive in our package. But in the city, either breakfast or dinner is included. Please go through the detailed itinerary for each day to see which meals are included. During the trek, breakfast and dinner will be served in the same lodge where we spend overnight and our expert trek leader will be taking you to the clean hotels/restaurants for lunch on the way to your destination.

Normal water will be provided free of cost but we suggest you carry water purification pills to purify the water. If you prefer to drink packaged bottled mineral water, you will easily get in shops or tea houses, but the expense should be paid by the client as it is not included in the package.

 

The best season for the Trek

The best season is totally based on one's preferences. The two best seasons to trek Ghorepani Poon Hill are spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November). Both seasons offer you incredibly clear blue skies, breathtaking views of the mountains, and the perfect temperature. The main feature of spring is its greenery and less-busy paths, but it also comes with the chance of rainfall. 

 

Luggage/Backpack on Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek of the Annapurna Region

Our porters will carry your major luggage while you carry a backpack with items very handy while trekking such as water bottle, towel, tissue or toilet paper, camera or any other stuff which you feel is necessary during your trek. Gears and clothes not needed during your trek can be left in the hotel safe deposit box properly locked without any extra charge. Domestic airlines of Nepal do not allow more than 15 kg including your hand baggage. If your baggage exceeds more than 15 kg, an extra charge will cover that up but isn’t included in our package.

 

Guide/Porter on Trek

Redrose Travel provides honest porters and well experienced first aid certified, altitude sickness trained trekking guides who will be handling all your issues on the trip. All our staffs are very cordial and sincere. The porter will be carrying up to 10 kg luggage of each client. While trekking in a bigger group i.e. more than 10 people - an additional guide will be provided and the group also can be split according to the number of people in the group. 

 

Group Size, and Crew Member:

Redrose Travel arranges Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek with a minimum solitary client to a maximum of 8 in a group. The larger group we will be arranged by dividing the groups into two or more according to the number of people. However, although you might be staying in the same lodge, but - during your trek - you might be having a different guide.

 

Personal Expenses on Trek:

Personal expenses totally depend upon how extravagant are you in nature. Our package includes the cost of accommodation and meals during your trek as mentioned in the itinerary. Besides that, you are liable to pay for additional meals, table drinks, snacks, hot shower (accessible in some places), alcoholic drinks, entrance fee (around $ 25 ) for visiting heritage sites of Kathmandu, meals in Kathmandu (around $ 5-7), tips for driver, guide and porters, etc. Tips to the guides, porter or any other members are not mandatory. You can tip them if you are satisfied with their service.

 

Available Gears

Trekking equipment is readily available in the stores of Kathmandu at a very reasonable price or it can also be hired with a minimal charge per day. So, you don’t have to carry or buy from your hometown.

 

A Usual Day on Trek

These are the approximate guidelines for a trek on each day which may differ according to the itinerary or schedule or your pace while trekking. Normally, you are required to trek for 4-6 hours each day. We start our trek after breakfast and stop for the lunch. We trek for 3-4 hours after lunch to reach our destination. If we reach our destination in afternoon, you can spend rest of the hours relaxing, take shower or just wander around.

 

Greetings at the Airport

After booking and confirming your EBC trek with us, we suggest you flow all the information such as - your number of days of stay, departure date, returning date, & international flight details (arrival time, flight number, ). After getting this information, a representative of Ganesh Himal Hiking Team can easily pick you up from the airport on time. 

After you complete the formalities of the airport and come to the exit gate, you can spot GHHT member holding a placard of your name or Redrose Travel waiting outside the terminal. After meeting and greetings, we will transfer you to the hotel in our private car. If you have booked the hotel by yourself, please let us know in advance, so that we can drop you at your respective hotel.

 

Changes in the Itinerary

Our regular itinerary of the Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek is 8 days unless you have customized it.  The itinerary has been carefully designed by our operation manager which is very pragmatic & includes the high altitude acclimatizing. These 8 days includes your arrival day, departure and sightseeing Kathmandu. It also has an extra day which allows flexibility to adjust the delay or cancellation of flight due to sudden changes in the Himalayan weather. If you would like to extend more days or lessen some, we surely can do that as per your wish.

 

Safety Measures

Client’s safety is our main priority and we make sure that each and every client is well taken care of.  If by chance anyone gets sick during the trek, we will take you to the nearest hospital as soon as possible. If the condition is serious – we will use the rescue helicopter to take you to the nearest hospital while all the expenses will be carried out by the travel insurance company. We suggest you get insured for up to 6000 meters.

 

 

Booking and Payment

After confirming or booking the trip – all we need is the copy of the passport, insurance policy, and the international flight details (ticket). Then, a 20% advance deposit is required for any trip, trek or expedition which is not refundable - used for reservations of hotels and lodges according to the itinerary.

The remaining balance is due when you arrive at Kathmandu and can be paid by any means convenient to you. We prefer payment via cash (to avoid any extra service charge) but bank transfer, credit cards, western union, and pay pal are also the accepted form of payments.

How do I get a visa for the trek?

Upon arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu, you can obtain a visa with cash for the duration of your stay in Nepal.

Will I have access to internet and electricity during the trek, and are there ATMs to withdraw cash?

WiFi and electricity are available in most guesthouses along the trek, but access may be limited. There are no ATMs on the trek, so be sure to exchange currency beforehand and carry enough Nepali rupees to cover your needs. Consider bringing a power bank for additional charging.

What kind of food and accommodation are included in the trek package?

The trek includes delicious meals throughout your journey. You'll enjoy local Nepali cuisine like momo and dal bhat, with potential international options available as well. You'll be staying in cozy teahouses run by families. These teahouses offer basic amenities and communal dining areas, providing opportunities to connect with other trekkers and experience the local culture.

How difficult is the trek, and what is the highest altitude we will reach??

The Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek is considered moderately challenging, making it suitable for both first-time trekkers with decent fitness and seasoned trekkers. The highest point of the trek is Poon Hill, reaching 3210 meters. Altitude sickness is a possibility at this elevation. To minimize risk, ascend slowly, take frequent rest breaks, and stay well-hydrated.
