Overview of the trip

The Nepal and Tibet tour is an 8-day trip across Nepal and Tibet that takes you to the diverse landscapes of two countries famous for their mountains, plateaus, and cultures. The trip is famous as you will be able to explore Nepalese culture as well as Tibetan culture. From famous Hindu temples to Buddhist monasteries, this trip showcases the Hindu and Buddhist cultures as well. In Nepal, you will be discovering the UNESCO heritage sites and the mountains from the Nagarkot hills, whereas you will be exploring the high altitudes homing to different monasteries in Tibet.

The trip begins upon your arrival at Kathmandu, the capital city of Nepal. Towards the beginning of the trip, we will explore the Patan Durbar Square, famous for the temples, shrines, statues, sculptures, carvings, temples, and other monuments built by the kings around it in the ancient period. Ahead of our expedition, we will visit Boudhanath Stupa, a famous Buddhist stupa built in a mandala style offering a peaceful aura with the sound of Buddhist prayers echoing around the stupa.

Our next site is the Pashupatinath Temple, which is a Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temple is made in pagoda style and houses hundreds of Shiva lingams around the temple and 500 smaller shrines of various Hindu gods. Next, we visit Boudhanath Stupa, a famous Buddhist stupa built in a mandala style offering a peaceful aura with the sound of Buddhist prayers echoing around the stupa. Another Buddhist site we explore is the Swayambhunath, also known as the Monkey Temple, as it is home to numerous monkeys roaming around the stupa. The stupa resides at a height from where the panoramic view of the whole Kathmandu city can be enjoyed.

The last site we explore in the capital city is the Bhaktapur Durbar Square, famous for the museums preserving the medieval arts and architecture. The Durbar Square is home to many sculptures, and pagoda temples dedicated to different gods and goddesses, which were built by the kings in ancient periods. Continuing the trip, we head to the Nagarkot Hills, where you can see a stunning view of the sunrise over the Kathmandu valley. You will be able to see a glimpse of the Himalayan range, with Manaslu, Ganesh Himal, and Gauri Shankar. Next, we head back to Kathmandu and then take a flight to Lhasa.

We start sightseeing in Lhasa from the Potala Palace built at an altitude of 3700 meters, also known as the political and religious center of Tibet. After Potala Palace, we explore the Jokhang Temple, another Buddhist temple, and then we head to Barkhor Street, walking through the lively markets filled with Tibetan arts and crafts. Towards the conclusion of the trip, we head to Dadong village, showcasing a rich Tibetan culture, topographical diversity, and two ancient temples as well. Next is the Sera Monastery, one of the largest and oldest monasteries in Lhasa. Finally, we head to Kathmandu, or you can also take a flight from China, marking the completion of your trip.

 

Itinerary

Day 1 : Arrival in Kathmandu and transfer to your hotel (1,400 meters)

Your trip begins upon your arrival at the Tribhuvan International Airport where our Red Rose representatives will pick you up from the airport and then transfer you to a 3 or 5-star rated hotel in the capital city. You will rest today and can roam around the streets in the evening and buy some trip accessories if needed.

Day 2 : Guided sightseeing in Kathmandu

Early in the morning after breakfast, we start sightseeing,starting from the Patan Durbar square situated at Lalitpur. A guide from the Red Rose Travels will accompany you to these sites. The palace is famous for showcasing ancient historical monuments such as religious temples, carvings and shrines built by the Malla kings who used to rule the city from this palace. The Garuda Pillar, Taleju Temple and Krishna Temple are the major tourist attractions of this place. Krishna temple is also famous because of its shikhara style architecture. Later we will head to Patan museum where you can capture the lifestyle and arts of the Malla era preserved in the museum.

Next, we head towards the Pashupatinath temple which is one of the oldest temples in Nepal. Dedicated to the Hindu god Lord Shiva the temple is made in pagoda style having a golden gaur enclosed within 4 big doors. The temple consists of more than 500 shrines dedicated to different deities. The temple is situated beside the Bagmati river which is considered a holy river..The temple is strictly for only Hindus hence you can't enter the temple but you can see different Hindu traditions being performed beside the holy river.

Later in the day, you visit the Boudhanath stupa, a famous Buddhist site located about 6 km east of the capital city. It is one of the largest stupas built 36 meters high featuring beautiful mandala-style architecture. It is one of the happening places in the valley attracting both local and International tourists. You can also see Buddhist pilgrimages from around the world spinning the prayer wheel and revolving around the stupa offering their prayers to the stupa.

After the sightseeing, the guide will transfer you to your hotel where you will be staying overnight.

Day 3 : Sightseeing around Kathmandu and drive to Nagarkot (2,200 meters).

Continuing our sightseeing around Kathmandu today we head to the Buddhist religious site, Swayambhunath stupa also called the monkey temple as you can encounter monkeys roaming all around the stupa. The stupa is situated on the west side of the hill at a height, one of the best views of the whole Kathmandu valley can be captured from here. You can find both Hindu and Buddhist pilgrims at the stupa. The stupa being the oldest includes many shrines and monasteries where Buddhist pilgrimages can be seen praying around them.

Next, we head to the Bhaktapur city to visit the famous Bhaktapur Durbar square a cultural site of Nepal where the Malla kings used to reside. The Durbar is famous as it is home to many medieval period arts and architecture. You can capture the Newari architecture such as wooden windows, traditional brick buildings and stone sculptures all around Durbar Square. The Dubar is famous for its museums where traditional Nepali arts and crafts are kept preserved.

After the sightseeing, we drive to Nagarkot in the evening which will take us one hour in a private tourist vehicle. Nagarkot is a famous tourist destination as it offers great views of the valley as well as the Himalayas. You can encounter panoramic views of mountains such as Mount Everest, Manaslu, Ganesh Himal, Langtang, Gauri Shankar and numbers from the viewpoint of Nagarkot. You will be encountering one of the best sunrise views tomorrow morning from Nagarkot.

Day 4 : Sunrise at Nagarkot, drive to Kathmandu, and flight to Lhasa (3,650 meters)

Today we will wake up early in the morning to capture the sunrise over the Himalayas. The sun's golden rays hitting the white snow-capped mountains reveal a mesmerising view. A chain of the Himalayas can be seen from the viewpoint.

After capturing the sunrise we set out for Kathmandu and then catch a flight to Lhasa, Tibet from the Tribhuvan International Airport. Lhasa being in a high altitude place will rest and acclimatize our body throughout the day after reaching Lhasa.

Day 5 : Guided sightseeing in Lhasa (3,700 meters)

Today we will have Breakfast in the hotel and then the sightseeing around Lhasa will begin.The first place we head is to the Potala Palace built at an altitude of 3700 meters, also known as the political and religious center of Tibet. The Palace serves as a place for the Dalai lama's preaching. The mesmerizing architecture of the white and red Palace including the Thangkas, numerous Buddha statues, murals and religious Buddhist arts are the main attractions of the Palace.

After the Potala Palace, we head to the Jokhang temple in the afternoon. The temple is one of the sacred Buddhist temples homing a 12-year-old statue of the Shakyamuni. You can capture the architectural style of Tibet, China, Nepal and India as well inside the temple. The roof of the temple showcases beautiful views of the Barkhor and the Potala Palace. You can see and immerse yourself in the traditions and prayers of the Tibetan devotees rotating around the temple in colourful outfits offering their prayers.

Concluding the day we head to Barkhor street, located in the heart of Lhasa. It is one of the famous historical sites which is now also a shopping market having many traditional Tibetan arts and crafts. You can buy some crafts as a memento of the trip as well.

Day 6 : Guided sightseeing in Lhasa (Dadong village and Sera Monastery)

Today we explore Dadong village one of the most beautiful villages in Tibet known for its beautiful scenery and traditional Tibetan-style architecture. You can dive into the Tibetan culture here exploring the Nimatang temple known for having different Tibetan medicines and spiritual traditions. The village has been one of the famous tourist destination places as the village offers a peaceful exposure to the original Tibetan lifestyle.

Concluding our sightseeing we head to the Sera Monastery located north of the Potala Palace. The Palace is famous for its architecture and rich Buddhist culture and art. Except for those you can witness debates among the educated monks about Buddhist philosophy in the Monastery.

Day 7 : Departure from Lhasa

Today marks the end of your trip,you can take your flight from either the mainland city of China or from Tribhuvan International Airport as well. Our representatives from Red Rose Travels and Tours will transfer you to the airport where you can catch your flight to your next destination. We hope to see you soon on another trip.

Which is the best time for this trip?

The best time to visit is from May to September, as the weather is mild and warm during May, with summer rains in June and August, and cool weather in September. The average temperature might vary from 6°C to 23°C making it perfect for the trip.

December to January the temperature may vary from -12°C to 14°C making the weather very cold which is why it is also one of the off seasons in Tibet. During February and March Tibet is closed to foreign tourists.

April, October and November also offer good weather conditions but the temperature may vary from -2°C to 17°C in April and October and -7°C to 12°C in November making the weather colder.

Will I experience altitude sickness in Tibet?

Due to the high altitude, there is a chance of altitude sickness in Tibet but most visitors don't experience serious altitude sickness in any case, if you get the symptoms Red Rose Travel and Tours team and guide will always be ready with medical care if needed. How to travel to Tibet? How is visa processing done for Tibet?

 If you are traveling from other countries then you need to get a China visa and then get the Tibet travel permit from a mainland Chinese city. If you're traveling from Kathmandu then you need a Tibet visa from the Chinese embassy in Kathmandu which will take 3 days.

Which currency can I use on the trip? Can I use credit cards or ATM cards?

In Nepal, you can use Nepalese rupees as well as US dollars too in some tourist areas. The best option is to convert the money into Nepali rupees from a bank in Nepal. Atm is found in most of the places here.

Chinese yuan is used in Tibet except that only US dollars are accepted. You might not get a good exchange rate while exchanging the dollars. You can use a credit card at the hotels and bank. The best option is to convert your money to Chinese currency in the Bank of China.ATM is mostly not used here.
