Overview of the trip

Mount Kailash Mansarovar Tour is a 12-day tour taking you on a spiritual journey to the holy Mount Kailash and Lake Mansarovar. The trip is one of the most famous pilgrimage sites as it is believed that the Hindu god Lord Shiva used to reside in Mount Kailash with goddess Parvati and their children, Ganesha and Kartikeya. The Mountain is one of the sacred places for the Hindus as well as Jains and Tibetans. Another famous landmark Lake Mansarovar is also a holy Lake flowing along Mount Kailash which is believed to be the birthplace of the Lord Brahma. The Lake is surrounded by snow-capped Mountains providing a mesmerizing view.

The tour begins from Kathmandu and then towards the Sino-Nepal border, along the southern side of the Himalayas. Passing through the Langtang National Park you will be able to capture numerous snow-capped Mountains, dense forests and some wild animals.

From Rasuwa you enter China through the Gyirong border. The Giryong Valley is one of the famous Sherpa villages with dense forests and woods. Next along the route, you will be able to see Mt.Shishapangma, the world's 14th highest peak with an elevation of 8027 meters and then Lake Peiku Tso situated at an elevation of 4590 meters.

Next, you arrive at the County amidst the Himalayan and Gangdise ranges. As you pass through the Mayum La Mountain you can capture the Lake Mansarovar in the distance with Mount Kailash standing high behind the Lake.

After visiting the Mansarovar Lake you will head to the Dirapuk monastery located at the foot of Mount Kailash. The monastery offers a majestic sunset view over Mount Kailash if the weather is clear. Next day you head towards the western slope of Mount Kailash at 5800 meters.

Towards the conclusion of the tour, you will pass through the Dolma La Pass at an altitude of 5630 meters where the spirituality is high in the surroundings as you can see prayer flags everywhere. Next, you will return to Darchen from Zutul Puk monastery to Saga and then head to Gyirong from Saga where your trekking journey concludes.

Itinerary

Day 1 : Kathmandu to Rasuwa Gadhi

Your journey begins upon your arrival at Kathmandu, where our representatives from Red Rose Travels will receive you from the Tribhuvan International Airport, from where we will take you to a comfortable and well-rated hotel.

The next morning we will be heading towards the Sino-Nepal border in a 7-hour-long drive. Our destination from today will be Rasuwa Gadhi. Along the route you will encounter bumpy roads but amazing views of the snow-capped Mountains, dense forests and some wild animals as well we will also be passing through the Langtang National Park.

We arrive at Rasuwa in the evening and stay overnight in a hotel there.

Day 2 : Rasua gadi to Gyirong

Today we will wake up early and head to the border from where we enter China through the Gyirong border. A Tibetan guide will be organized for you from Red Rose Travels in the Gyirong side. We will be exploring some Sherpa villages in the Gyirong village. The valley is famous for its Sherpa culture, and beautiful snow-capped Himalayas views surrounding the valley.

We will be staying in the Gyirong today so that our bodies can get acclimatized in the high altitude. We will stay overnight in a guest house in the valley.

Day 3 : Gyirong to Saga

Today we will be heading towards the border of the Ngari plateau. Early in the morning after breakfast, we leave Gyirong and head for Saga in a private tourist vehicle. The route offers majestic views of Mt.Shishapangma, the world's 14th highest peak with an elevation of 8027 meters and Lake Peiku Tso situated at an elevation of 4590 meters.

After a long drive, you arrive at Saga County where we will stay overnight today.

Day 4 : Saga to Darchen via Lake Manasarovar

Early in the morning after breakfast our trip to Darchen starts from Saga. Darchen is a small town located at the foot of Mount Kailash. We will pass through the Gongzhu Cuo Lake in the route and then cross the Mayum La Mountain at 5211 meters. After crossing the Mountain we reach the Ngari region from where you will encounter the view of the holy Lake Manasarovar in the distance with Mount Kailash standing tall behind the Lake. We will have a short break in the Lakeside to capture the moment and then head to Darchen.

We will stay overnight at a Guesthouse in Darchen today.

Day 5 : Darchen to Dirapuk Monastery

From today your trekking will start along the valley from the base of Mount Kailash. Early in the morning, we have our breakfast and then take a bus drive to Sarshung Valley from Darchen. From here the trek starts to Mount Kailash. We move along the base of the Mount Kailash with the views of both southern and western slope of the Mountain present ahead of us.

We reach the foot of the western slope after some time where we explore the Dirapuk monastery, a sacred stupa which offers mesmerizing views of the northern face of Mount Kailash.

We will stay in a guesthouse in Dirapuk monastery today and spend the rest of our day exploring the monastery.

Day 6 : Dirapuk Monastery to the Western Slope of Mt. Kailash Trek

Today we trek from Dirapuk monastery to the western slope of Mount Kailash at an elevation of 5899 meters. The views of a beautiful glacier and the centre of the Mountain can be enjoyed from here.

If you are fit enough then the guide will take you closer to the walls of Mount Kailash so that you can touch the sacred Mountain and take its blessings. After the expedition on the western slope, we return to the Dirapuk monastery through the same route.

We will stay overnight in a local guesthouse near the Dirapuk monastery today.

Day 7 : Dirapuk Monastery to Zutulpuk Monastery

Today is one of the most challenging days of the Mount Kailash trek where you reach the highest point of the trek at 5630 meters. We start early in the morning from the Dirapuk Monastery and then trek for some time taking us to 5430 meters from where we can capture the breathtaking views of the sunrise above the northwest slope of Mount Kailash, the golden rays of the sun hitting the white snow-capped wall of the Mount Kailash is an unforgettable view.

Continuing we reach the Dolma la pass, the highest point of the trek at 5630 meters. The pass is filled with prayer flags, then we cross the Dolma la pass reaching the green Lake of Compassion also called Gaurikund where pilgrims come to purify their sins. Later we descend slowly and head to the valley below the southeast foot of Mount Kailash, the Zutulpuk monastery is located here famous as a Buddhist yogi Milarepa is believed to have meditated here.

We will stay overnight in a guesthouse near Zutulpuk Monastery.

Day 8 : Zutulpuk Monastery to Darchen, and Drive to Saga

Today we trek back from Zutulpuk monastery to Darchen where we started our Kailash trek. Then we drive back to Saga enjoying the amazing views of the Ngari plateau and the Gangdise Mountain range. We will stay at Saga overnight.

Day 9 : Saga to Gyirong

We have reached the end of our journey. Today we start our journey in the morning and head to the Gyirong valley. We take a drive from Saga to Gyirong and have an expedition in the Gyirong valley throughout the day. We will stay overnight in a guesthouse in Gyirong.

Day 10 : Gyirong Border to Kathmandu

Today is the last day of the trip. We bid farewell to Tibet and return to Nepal. We drive from Gyirong and head to the border of Nepal and China. Here our Red Rose representatives and Nepali staffs will receive you and then transfer you back to Kathmandu.

Day 11 : Departure

What is the best time to visit Mount Kailash Mansarovar?

The best time to visit Mount Kailash Mansarovar is between May to September when the weather is milder and you can trek easily. The weather in this season will be more clear making most of the scenery visible.

What are the document requirements to apply for Kailash Yatra Registration?

You will need a valid passport from your respective countries having a minimum of 6 months validation time for travelling to Mt. Kailash and Lake Mansarovar are situated in Tibet, China.

What kind of fitness is needed for this trek?

You need to be fit physically and mentally for this trek. We suggest you take a medical exam before this tour as it will be very complicated for people with dust allergies, asthma,  and high blood pressure to complete this trek.

What types of accommodations are available on this trek?

In most cases, the accommodation along the way is simple guesthouses or tea houses. The facilities may not be available at high elevations, particularly in the areas of Dirapuk and Zutulpuk where the monasteries are located. Rooms are commonly shared, the dining is in a common area and there are no luxuries.

What should I pack for this tour?

Warm clothes, a trekking boots, a first aid kit with altitude sickness medication, sunscreen, personal items like a refillable water bottle, and energy snacks are the main belongings. We will  supply you with a thorough packing list.

Is there mobile connectivity and electricity during the trek?

Mobile network coverage is spotty, mainly in the higher altitudes. Some guesthouses provide charging services for a minimal charge, but accessibility might be a problem in some areas. It’s best to bring extra power banks and prepare to be off the grid in some parts of the trip.
