Trek Highlights & Summary of Mount Everest Base Camp

The Everest Base Camp Trek offers you the raw beauty of the Himalayas as well as comfortable, well maintained paths. Situated in the middle of the Himalayas, this region is famous for its beautiful scenery and friendly Sherpa people. This trek takes you closer to the Everest as well as the traditions, culture, and lifestyle of the people living in this region.

The 14-day package will take you to a height of 5464 metres, from which you can encounter panoramic views of the Majestic Mountains at a height of more than 8000 meters. Trekkers can capture breathtaking views of mountains such as  Pumori,Lhotse,Nuptse, Lobuche, and the legendary Mount Everest.

Everest base camp journey starts with a 35-minute scenic mountain flight from Kathmandu to Lukla, which is also known as the gateway to the Everest base camp during the months of January, February, June, July, August, September, and December. But we might have to take a 20-minute flight from Manthali to Lukla following a 5 to 6 hours drive from Kathmandu to Manthali during the months of March, April, May, October, and November.

Lukla, a small town in the Solukhumbu district, is the starting and ending point of this trek. After starting the trek from Lukla, you will be moving along the Dudh Koshi river bank, passing through the Sagarmatha National Park, home to many rare flora and fauna. From here, trekkers will head to the most popular trading point in this region,Namche Bazaar. Namche Bazaar is a big trading hub as well as an acclimatisation destination for trekkers to get used to the high altitude.

The trails in EBC are challenging, but passing through the beautiful forests and farmland hills while the mountains touch the sky in front of you will motivate you to get closer to the destination. After an acclimatisation day at the Namche bazaar, we will head to Tengboche. At Tengboche, you will visit the oldest monastery in this region, the Tengboche monastery, and offer your prayers. Next, we head to Dingboche and then to Lobuche. The trail gets more demanding as we move ahead, but also rewarding as you get to see Lhotse, Nuptse, Makalu, Cho Oyu, Ama Dablam, and many more peaks during the trek.

Continuing, we will trek to Gorak Shep, walking alongside the Khumbu glacier, reach the ultimate destination, Everest base camp, and capture priceless memories before the world’s tallest peak. After enjoying the view between the Himalayas, we return to Gorak Shep. From Gorak Shep, trekkers trek to the Kala Patthar at an elevation of 5644 metres, one of the most popular viewpoints in Nepal. Trekkers can experience the golden rays of the sunrise covering Mount Everest and other peaks, providing a mesmerising scene. After that, trekkers will be heading to Gorak Shep and then descending to Pheriche village. From Pheriche village, we follow the familiar trail to Tengboche, moving through red rhododendron and juniper-filled forests. Continuing trekkers reach Namche and then Lukla, from where a beautiful scenic flight above the mighty mountains takes you back to the capital city of Kathmandu, ending this adventurous 14-day trek.

FAQ

How challenging is the trek, and what's the daily walking duration like?

How challenging is the trek, and what's the daily walking duration like?

The Everest Base Camp (EBC) trek is well within reach for individuals willing to prepare adequately beforehand. It's essentially a walk with no technical aspects involved; it's merely putting one foot in front of the other. The key to success is to avoid rushing and take your time.

A helpful tip from our staff is, "If you maintain a positive mindset and acknowledge that you'll be trekking for approximately 14 days, you can condition your body accordingly. Often, trekking difficulty is 70% mental."

Our Everest Base Camp & Kala Pattar trek is categorized as moderate, which means that you typically won't be engaged in more than eight hours of physical activity in a day. Some days may involve as little as 4-5 hours of walking, or even just 2-3 hours, although there will be segments that provide a challenge. With proper training and a positive attitude, you can enter the trek well-prepared, and that mindset is more than half the battle.

Is it very steep?

On our Everest Base Camp & Kala Pattar trek, participants should be at ease with occasional rugged terrain and anticipate extended, steep inclines. There are days when you may encounter ascents and descents exceeding 500 meters. It's essential to keep in mind that speed isn't the primary focus; what matters most are your endurance, self-assurance, and persistence.

Do you offer any training programs for the trek?

The training regimen required to prepare for your Everest Base Camp (EBC) trek varies depending on your current fitness level and any medical considerations. We do not provide specific, one-size-fits-all training programs since it's challenging to prescribe a universal plan. However, we recommend a minimum of five weekly exercise sessions, each lasting about an hour. These activities may include hill walking, cycling, running, and strength training to ensure you are physically prepared for the trek.

Do many people have issues acclimatizing?

Altitude sickness can vary from person to person, but we have implemented a trek schedule with carefully timed acclimatization days to assist trekkers in acclimating.

Nevertheless, during the acclimatization process, you might experience some of the following symptoms:
• Headaches
• Fatigue
• Disrupted sleep
• Decreased appetite or nausea
• Shortness of breath
• Coughing
• Palpitations
• Swelling of the hands and face

All our group leaders possess extensive first aid training, and we encourage you to maintain open communication with the group leader if you experience any symptoms, enabling effective monitoring.

To minimize the effects of altitude sickness, it's essential to take your time, maintain a slow and steady trekking pace, and stay well-hydrated. Our trek leaders constantly monitor travelers, ensuring everyone consumes ample fluids. We provide clean drinking water, offer morning and afternoon tea, and even offer juice for an electrolyte boost throughout the journey.

Are private rooms available in Kathmandu and during the trek?

In Kathmandu, we can make arrangements for a private room for an extra fee. However, it's not guaranteed when trekking. While it's nearly impossible to find a private room during the peak season of the year, tea houses may be able to provide private rooms for an extra fee during the off-season.

Will I get to charge my electronics?

When you are in Kathmandu , you can charge at any time. However, you could also need to rely on a battery backup while on the hike. Therefore, it is recommended that you always have a portable battery backup with you.

Will I get a vegetarian meal option during the trek?

Yes, vegetarian food is available in a lot of teahouses. Therefore, it wouldn't be an issue if you are a vegetarian or choose not to take any meat items while hiking.

Is it possible for me to wash my clothes while on the trek?

Laundry services are usually available at hotels in Kathmandu. Although there won't likely be a laundry facility along the path, you could wash your light clothes in a stream of water or with tap water during your acclimatisation day.

Is there good wifi connection in the Himalayas?

Although guest hotels and tea shops along the Everest Base Camp route offer internet connectivity, the quality of the connection can be fairly variable.

For a little cost, some guest houses might provide Wi-Fi, however, the connection quality might not be good enough for frequent use. It's also possible that some tea shops have no Wi-Fi at all, so it's not a good idea to rely just on these connections while trekking.

What can I do to train myself at home for the trek?

It is recommended to work out on a regular basis (running, swimming, or the gym) for at least half an hour in order to get ready for the trip. At least 30 days before the trek, try to walk at a moderate speed for 30 to 45 minutes at a time. Not only will this increase your cardiovascular endurance but also your overall fitness. Your stability and endurance can also be improved by strengthening your back, legs, and core through exercises or stair climbing, particularly on uneven terrain.

If you're not currently meeting these criteria, don't worry! You can still prepare for the trek with a consistent training program:

Listen to your body, don't push yourself too hard, take rest days when needed, and consult a doctor if you have any concerns.

Focus on strengthening exercises like squats, lunges, planks, and core exercises.

Incorporate uphill sections into your walks or utilize a stairmaster to simulate the trek's terrain.

Start with shorter walks and gradually increase the duration and intensity as your fitness improves.
