The Everest High Passes and Island Peak Trek is considered a challenging 23 day trek designed for experienced trekkers who are seeking a challenging as well as rewarding adventure in the Everest Region. This difficult itinerary combines a total of three high-altitude passes (Renjo La, Cho La, and Kongma La) and a climb of Island Peak, which is at a staggering altitude of 6,189 meters. The trail throughout the trekking route will be full of diverse landscapes and iconic landmarks where you’ll get to push your limits and create everlasting memories in the majestic Himalayas.

Every season, the trek attracts heavy numbers of seasoned trekkers, as the trek gives you an opportunity to challenge yourself like not every trek can. The breathtaking views from every point, high passes, and peaks are something to hold on to. You will also experience the unique culture of the Sherpa people, who are well known for mountaineering. This trek is also famous for people who want to warm themselves up before trekking the Everest. 

While we are trekking, you will explore the four distinct valleys in the Everest region, and all of them will showcase their unique ecosystems. Another highlight of the trek will certainly be the conquest of the three challenging passes, which offer panoramic views of Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and other surrounding peaks. Lastly, the most challenging part of the trek will be the ascent to Island Peak at 6,189 metres. 

The trek begins with a scenic flight from the capital, Kathmandu, to Lukla. The hiking starts as we gradually ascend to the Namche bazar on the third day and enjoy the day there. We will enjoy the culture and simple lifestyle and challenge ourselves as we climb up to an altitude of over 6,000 meters. And lastly, we will conclude the trek with a final flight back to Kathmandu from Lukla.

Itinerary

Please note that this is a general itinerary, and actual trekking schedules may vary. Day 1 : Arrival in Kathmandu

Today will be your first day as you arrive at the vibrant capital of Nepal, Kathmandu. Depending on your arrival time, our team from Red Rose will be there to welcome you to the city. We will be driving you to your comfortable 3 star hotel in Thamel. You can relax and prepare for your trek while you are in the hotel. In the evening, we will organise a warm welcome dinner where you will meet our representative, and we will introduce you to your trekking guide. We will also brief you on the trek and its itinerary in detail.

Accommodation: A 3 Star Hotel in Kathmandu.

Altitude: 1350 m, 4428 ft

Day 2 : Flight to Lukla and Trek to Phakding

We will start the day early with a delicious breakfast at the hotel. Today we will take a flight to Lukla from Kathmandu or Manthali, depending on the season and crowd. The flight will be scenic as you will encounter the great Himalayas for the first time. After reaching Lukla, we will have a 3 hour hike to Phakding, which is a beautiful village in the Dudh Koshi Valley. We will stay for the night in Phakding. 

 

Altitude: 2845 m, 9,334 ft (Lukla) & 2610m, 8563 ft (Phakding)

Day 3 : Trek to Namche Bazar

Today is the infamous trading hub of the mountain, and the Sherpa people will be waiting for you. After a warm breakfast in the guest house, we will move towards Namche Bazar. The trek should not last more than 6 hours, during which we hike along the river bank and encounter traditional villages. We can capture the stunning view of the Himalayas upon reaching Namche Bazar. We will stay for the night in a cosy guest house at Namche Bazar. 

 

Altitude: 3440 m,11283 ft

Day 4 : Acclimatisation Day in Namche Bazar

In just two days, we have accumulated a total altitude of 3440 metres, which is already considered to pose a risk of altitude sickness. This is also the reason we will take things slowly and let our bodies adjust to the high altitude. Though it doesn’t mean we won’t be doing anything, We will explore Namche Bazaar, visit the local market, and take a hike to the Everest View Hotel to enjoy a panoramic view of the mountains.

Day 5 : Trek to Phortse Thanga

We continue the trek today and hike ourselves to the Phortse Thanga through diverse landscapes. Phortse Thanga is a small, charming village between towering peaks that we can reach after a 6-hour walk. We will stay in a guest house at Phortse Thanga for the night.

 

Altitude: 3,680 m, 12,073 ft

Day 6 : Trek to Machherma

On the sixth day of the journey, we will move ourselves further into the Himalayas. The path to Machherma is full of beautiful scenery, and if lucky, you may witness some unique wildlife. Maccherma is well known as a village for its yak pastures and stunning views, where we will settle for the night.

 

 

Altitude: 4,470 m, 14,665 ft

Day 7 : Trek to Gokyo

After an early morning breakfast, we will hike ourselves to one of our main destinations, Gokyo. Upon reaching Gokyo, which should take about 6 hours, we will capture the breathtaking scene and explore the area. We will settle for the night at a guest house in Gokyo.

 

Altitude: 4,800 m, 15,748 ft

Day 8 : Trek to Gokyo Ri

Today we will challenge ourselves with a hike to Gokyo Ri, which is at an elevation of 5483 meters. The Gokyo Ri offers you panoramic views of the surrounding peaks like Everest, Lhotse, and Cho Ouy. For the night, we will return to the guest house in Gokyo.

Day 9 : Trek to Thangna

Today we will hike for 4-5 hours to reach Thangna. Thangna offers contrasting landscapes and stunning views. The guest houses at Thagna will be very basic because of the remoteness of the place. You will gain new experience of remote life with a night in Thagna.

Day 10 : Trek to Dzongla via Cho La Pass

Today we will reward ourselves with a breathtaking panoramic view of the Himalayas from the top of Cho La Pass at an altitude of 5,368 meters. After conquering Cho La Pass, we will descend to Dzongla for the night in a guest house with very basic facilities.

Day 11 : Trek to Lobuche

Today we will move out of Dzongla and move towards Lobuche. Lobuche is a beautiful village at the foot of the Khumbu Glacier. The trek to Lobuche won’t take more than 5 hours. This place offers close-up views of the surrounding peaks. We will settle in for the night at Lobuche. 

 

Altitude: 4,910 m, 16,109 ft

Day 12 : Trek to Gorak Shep, Hike up to Kala Patthar

Day 12 of the trek will be challenging, which also means it will be an unforgettable experience and highly rewarding. Today we will ascend to Kala Patthar (5555 meters). Kala Patthar offers you a stunning panorama of Everest. In the event that the weather favours us, we will be mesmerised by the golden sunset over the Himalayas before we descend to Gorak Shep for the night.

Day 13 : Trek to Everest Base Camp and return to Lobuche

Today will be one of the most demanding days in our trek, as we will be hiking for more than 8 hours. We will reach our destination, Everest Base Camp, by crossing the Khumbu Glacier. You are sure to be mesmerised by the view of Khumbu Glacier from the Everest Base Camp. Lastly, we will return to Lobuche to call for the night.

Day 14 : Trek to Chukhung via Kongma La Pass

You should be prepared to have a day of hiking, as today we will conquer Kongma La Pass. Today we will be on a journey full of scenic ascend and descend with stunning landscapes. We will pass through glacial lakes and views of Makalu before we conquer Kongma La Pass. After a short rest at the top, we will descend towards the valley of Chukhung, which will be our place to sleep.

Day 15 : Trek to Island Peak Base Camp

Today we will move towards the Island Peak Base Camp, which is the foot of our next big challenge. Today we will enjoy a relaxed trek through the Imja Valley, which is energised by the presence of the majestic Ama Dablam and the surrounding scenery. We should reach there in the mid-afternoon and settle into our tent camp. You don’t have to worry about the meals; they will be prepared by the professional team.

Day 16 : Acclimatisation Day at Island Peak Base Camp

Today we will relax, adjust ourselves to the altitude, and prepare ourselves for the big day tomorrow. Your guide will also offer you pre-ice climbing training to ensure you are confident and prepared with essential gear. You can explore the surroundings of the base camp and prepare yourself physically, but importantly mentally, for the next adventure.

 

Altitude: 5240 m, 17,192 ft 

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner.

Accommodation: Tented camp.

Day 17 : Reach the summit of Island Peak and return to Chukhung.

Today will be the most challenging day of the trek as we climb to the top of Island Peak at 6,187 meters. It will take more than 9 hours and test you mentally and physically throughout the trek. From the top of Island Peak, you will observe the breath-taking view and sense of accomplishment, which is worth all the hardship you endured during the day. Lastly, we will descend back to Chukhung and celebrate the success of the summit.

Day 18 : A spare day in case of bad weather conditions. (Optional)

This day is a buffer day in case of unfavourable weather conditions on the climbing day. 

Day 19 : Trek to Tengboche

Today onwards, we will start leaving high mountains behind and move to Tengboche, a picturesque village with stunning mountain scenery. We will traverse through charming villages like Dingboche, Orsho, and Shomare, crossing suspension bridges, meeting locals, and learning about new cultures. Tengboche will be the place where we call our night in the guest house there. 

 

Altitude: 3680 m, 12,073 ft

Accommodation: Tea House or Trekking Lodge.

Day 20 : Trek to Namche Bazaar

Today we will hike for 5 to 6 hours to reach Namche Bazaar. We will traverse through fir forest, rhododendron forest, and cross the Dudh Koshi River. We will also have the option to visit Kunde and Khumjung villages, which are both renowned for their unique cultures and heritage. 

 

Altitude: 3,440 m, 11,286 ft 

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner.

Accommodation: Tea House or Trekking Lodge.

Day 21 : Trek to Lukla

Final day of trekking as we move to Lukla. The trek will not take more than 6 hours, which will take us to the point where we started the trek. We will celebrate the unforgettable memories and achievements that we created in the Himalayas.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner.

Accommodation: Tea House or Trekking lodge.

Day 22 : Flight back to Kathmandu

Today we mark the end of our incredible journey. We will bid farewell to the majestic Himalayas, where we spent more than two weeks creating memories. Depending on the season, we’ll take the flight back to Kathmandu or Manthali. 

As we travel to Kathmandu, we will transfer you to your hotel to relax your body, take showers, and cherish the experience of a successful trek. In the evening, we will host a farewell dinner in a fine restaurant and end this journey.

Day 23 : Departure

We mark the end of this trek today. Today we will bid you farewell and drive you to the Tribhuvan International Airport, Kathmandu. I hope you will forever cherish the experiences and memories you made in the colourful country of Nepal.

Essential Info

Hotel and Lodge on Everest Three Pass with Island Peak Climbing:

Redrose Travel arranges it’s best for comfortable and pleasant accommodation and also provides you nourished hygienic food. We will be staying at the standard hotel (rating of 2 – 3 Star) in Kathmandu whereas, in the remote areas, we will be staying at a tea house or a local lodge. We can also arrange luxurious rooms from 4 – 5 Star hotels in the cities with an additional charge but the remote mountainous regions have no such facilities.

Tea houses and local lodges in the remote region will have a usual bed with usual mattress and a pillow. Only a few of them have electricity but the rest rely on lanterns or candles lights. Booking of the room is done prior to the starting of the trek. If in case we are not able to book the room in advance, we can book it upon reaching there as these areas have ample of lodges and tea houses. If for some reason, we aren’t able to book a lodge/teahouse - we can easily set a camp which will be the most adventurous part of the trek itself.



Food and Drinks for High Pass Trek and Island Peak Climbing:

Redrose Travel focuses on client’s safety and health and gives it the foremost priority. We make sure that each and every client get the same portion of clean, hygienic and nourishing food which is a very necessary - especially while trekking.

During the trek - all the meals i.e. breakfast, lunch, and dinner are provided inclusive in our package. But in the city, either breakfast or dinner is included. Please go through the detailed itinerary for each day to see which meals are included. During the trek, breakfast and dinner will be served in the same lodge where we spend overnight and our expert trek leader will be taking you to the clean hotels/restaurants for lunch on the way to your destination.

We at Red Rose Travels and Tours will ensure you a comfortable night and a thrilling experience in tented camps throughout the trek. As we move towards higher altitudes, the facilities in the guest house will only decrease due to their remoteness, and we want you to embrace this chance to fully immerse yourself in Mother Nature. The guest houses at lower elevations will provide you with basic facilities, shared rooms until you demand, and shared restrooms. 

You will be served with diverse options when it comes to food at lower altitudes, including Western, Asian, Nepali, and Tibetan dishes. We suggest you have local dishes and vegetables with local flavours, as those foods will help you adjust to the altitude. 

Normal water will be provided free of cost but we suggest you carry water purification pills to purify the water. If you prefer to drink packaged bottled mineral water, you will easily get in shops or tea houses, but the expense should be paid by the client as it is not included in the package.



Best time for Everest Base Camp with Island Peak Trek

The majestic Himalayas offer you two ideal seasons to trek Everest High Passes and Island Peak. Spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) are two prominent seasons that promise the best natural beauty, depending on your preferences. 

  1. Spring (March–May): Spring offers you warm temperatures, which is very nice to have considering we are trekking through the Himalayas. The trail will be covered with blooming wildflowers and lush greenery. Also, you need to be prepared for occasional snowfall as we climb higher altitudes. 
  2. Autumn (September–November): Autumn offers crystal-clear blue skies, meaning you will be able to witness breathtaking panoramas of the Himalayas and capture beautiful photographs. You should be prepared for potential crowds on the trails, as this season is the festive season in Nepal and also the first choice of seasonal trekkers. 

Off Season:

Trekking in Nepal and Everest Base Camp during off-seasons is also quite common. But the Island Peak climb will be difficult and quite challenging. Contact your travel agencies before booking the Island Peak expedition. The weather in the off-season presents a number of difficulties, too. Wintertime problems might also arise from extremely cold temperatures and a lot of snow. Therefore, with thoughtful preparation, it is possible to deal with this off-season weather.



Luggage/Backpack on this Trek:

Our porters will carry your major luggage while you carry a backpack with items very handy while trekking such as water bottle, towel, tissue or toilet paper, camera or any other stuff which you feel is necessary during your trek. Gears and clothes not needed during your trek can be left in the hotel safe deposit box properly locked without any extra charge. Domestic airlines of Nepal do not allow more than 15 kg including your hand baggage. If your baggage exceeds more than 15 kg, an extra charge will cover that up but isn’t included in our package.



Guide/Porter on Trek:

Redrose Travel provides honest porters and well experienced first aid certified, altitude sickness trained trekking guides who will be handling all your issues on the trip. All our staffs are very cordial and sincere. The porter will be carrying up to 10 kg luggage of each client. While trekking in a bigger group i.e. more than 10 people - an additional guide will be provided and the group also can be split according to the number of people in the group. 



Group Size, and Crew Member:

Redrose Travel arranges this Island Peak climbing with three high passes with a minimum of 2 clients to a maximum of 8 in a group. The larger group we will be arranged by dividing the groups into two or more according to the number of people. However, although you might be staying in the same lodge - but during your trek - you might be having a different guide.



Personal Expenses on Trek:

While our standard package covers most major expenses, like three meals every day during the trek, accommodation for every night, permits to explore the region, and transportation within Nepal, you should always be aware of additional costs that depend on you. The personal expenses included

  • Extra services at higher altitudes like electricity, wifi, laundry, and hot showers.
  • Tipping etc.

We encourage you to have open communications before booking to ensure you are very clear about what is included and not included in the packages. Available Gears/Equipment:

Trekking equipment is readily available in the stores of Kathmandu at a very reasonable price or it can also be hired with a minimal charge per day. So, you don’t have to buy or carry from your hometown.



A Usual Day on Trek:

We will start most days early with breathtaking mountain views and a delicious breakfast. We will start the trek, which will be 5–7 hours long, in which we explore diverse landscapes, unique cultures, and immerse ourselves in nature. At night, we will enjoy a communal dinner at guest houses and enjoy their simple lifestyle. In this trek, you will also experience sleeping in tented camps and have an exploration day to explore view points, charming villages, and local culture and traditions. 



Greetings at the Airport:

After booking and confirming your three passes trek and Island Peak climbing with us, we suggest you flow all the information such as - your number of days of stay, departure date, returning date, & international flight details (arrival time, flight number). After getting this information, a representative of Redrose Travel can easily pick you up from the airport on time.

After you complete the formalities of the airport and come to the exit gate, you can spot Redrose Travel member holding a placard of your name or Redrose Travel waiting outside the terminal. After meeting and greetings, we will transfer you to the hotel in our private car. If you have booked the hotel by yourself, please let us know in advance, so that we can drop you at your respective hotel.



Changes in the Itinerary:

Our regular itinerary 23 days for this adventure unless you have customized it. The itinerary has been carefully designed by our operation manager which is very pragmatic & includes the high altitude acclimatizing. These 23 days includes your arrival day, departure and sightseeing Kathmandu. It may also have an extra day which allows flexibility to adjust the delay or cancellation of flight due to sudden changes in the Himalayan weather (if applicable).

If you would like to extend more days or lessen some, we surely can do that as per your wish.



Altitude Sickness:

We would like to inform you that your safety throughout the trek is our first priority. The highest point of the trek is 6,189 metres at the top of the island peak, which is considered to be an altitude-risky region. Depending upon individual mental and physical health, any altitude over 3,000 is is considered to hold potential for altitude Sickness. 

You don’t need to think of this as a negative part of the trek, as the itinerary is planned in such a way that anyone in good physical condition will not have a hard time conquering the trek. We suggest our trekkers stay hydrated and take things easy by taking sufficient rest throughout the trek. 



Booking and Payment:

After confirming or booking the trip – all we need is the copy of the passport, insurance policy, and the international flight details (ticket). Then, a 20% advance deposit is required for any trip, trek or expedition which is not refundable - used for reservations of hotels and lodges according to the itinerary.

The remaining balance is due when you arrive at Kathmandu and can be paid by any means convenient to you. We prefer payment via cash (to avoid any extra service charge) but bank transfer, credit cards, western union, and pay pal are also the accepted form of payments.

Yes, you will need several permits, including the Sagarmatha National Park Entry Permit, Khumbu Rural Municipality Permit, and Island Peak Climbing Permit.

How cold does it get during the trek?

Temperatures can vary greatly depending on the season and altitude. In the higher regions and at night, temperatures can drop significantly, sometimes below freezing. Proper layering and insulated clothing are essential to stay warm.

What kind of food is available during the trek?

Teahouses along the trail offer a variety of meals, including Nepali, Tibetan, and international dishes. As you ascend higher, the menu options might become more limited, and it's advisable to stick to a balanced diet and stay hydrated.

How safe is Red Rose Trous?

The highest altitude on the trek is 6189 metres at Island Peak, which has a risk of altitude sickness. Your safety is our top priority, and we will do everything to ensure you are safe and enjoying yourself throughout the trek. 

We will assign you highly experienced and certified guides who are trained to manage their situations. We have scheduled enough rest and acclimatisation days to allow your body to adjust to increasing altitude. If you experience any symptoms of altitude sickness, we will guide you through proper rest and, if needed, take you to the nearest health care facility. In case the condition is critical, we will call for an emergency helicopter to evacuate you. The cost will be covered by your travel insurance, which we suggest you do in your home country

How is the Visa process in Nepal?

Our airport team will assist you with a smooth visa process. We recommend you bring cash for your visa (USD 30 for 15 days, USD 50 for 30 days, and USD 125 for 90 days), which will ensure a smooth transaction as the digital payment methods might not be available. 

Our team will be there to welcome you and pick you up at Tribhuvan International Airport. They will drive you to your comfortable hotel in Thamel, where you can relax and prepare for the trek. 

What should I pack for the trek?

We understand the importance of efficient packing, and we highly recommend that you bring only those things that you will use on the trek. Unnecessary items will only increase the load if you are trekking solo or even with porters. Essential items like quick-drying clothes, light shirts, and durable hiking shoes with good grip will help you throughout the trek. We also suggest you bring your UV protection, sunscreen, glasses, and hat.
